Let’s keep this brief; we know you’re ready to choose your hat.
Despite its name, the Panama hat is not from Panama, but Ecuador! The true origin
can be weaved back to a town called Montecristi in the 17th century, where they were
most commonly called Jipijapa, toquilla, or Montecristi (the latter two still being used
today). It wasn’t until the Gold Rush of the mid-1800s when many Americans went
through Panama to get to California, that the hat became popular.
Ecuadorians, aware of the trading opportunities in Central America, moved to
Panama and travelers looking for a hat to shield themselves from the sun, found
these stylish and lightweight straw hats. Fast-forward a few years later to 1855
World’s Fair in Paris, where the Panama hat was featured for the first time on a
global scale, President Theodore Roosevelt’s trip to see the construction of the
Panama Canal and the rest is history.
Over the years, the styles of the Panama hat have changed a bit, but the true
weaving and blocking remain the same.
Wondering which Panama style is for you? We’ve got you covered. There’s a
personality and persona for everyone – you can expect perfection.
